The hanging basket: here is a device which, for a moderate cost, can produce a completely spectacular effect! It is enough to be convinced to observe the flowering of cities: plant suspensions are among the most noticed compositions, both because of the beauty of plants (mixture of upright and drooping flowers) and their privileged location, at eye level. Sometimes it only takes a few well-chosen and well-placed plants to make a successful presentation! Which plants to hang? As is often the case, it's all about choice and preferences! In terms of plants, take into account, in addition to your desires, the constraints of the location (sunshine, humidity ...). Also take into account the season: do you want your basket to give its maximum in the heart of summer, or do you prefer a composition that will last until the first frosts? Finally, for a well-rounded composition, consider mixing varieties with a drooping and erect habit. A tip if your pendant has chains and your plants are suitable for it, run a few branches along them to dress them up! What type of container to choose? Again, the preferences are fine (style, material ...), even if the constraints of the location can partly dictate the choices. If your composition must take place on a wall, choose a half-basket shape that you can fix directly against it. In the case of an air suspension, opt for a round basket. Some basket models have a water reserve: useful for sheltered installations and for long weekends! Others, in terracotta, will offer better protection of the roots against heat.

Step 1: Choose the location of your plant suspension

A suspension calls for a very special development. Because if it can have the role of highlighting an element of the garden (a porch, the entrance to the house, a structural post ...), it is also an ornament in its own right! Here we choose to brighten up a pillar of support.

Step 2: Choose your suspension and the type of plants

Once you have chosen the location, study its characteristics. Is it sunny? Does it naturally receive water from the sky? These characteristics will decide both the type of plants and the type of suspension. In the case of our realization, the chosen location is sunny until mid-day and completely sheltered from the rain due to a high balcony overlooking. We will therefore preferably choose plants adapted to drought to prevent any risk in case of forgetting to water or of prolonged absence. Here, our choice fell on the two drooping varieties (a purslane and an ivy). We could have added a third with erect habit, but we choose sobriety, our basket being also reduced in size. So much for the choice of plants. As for the basin, our choice fell on a model with plasticized bottom. Our location sheltered from the rain eliminates any risk of too much water. Just be careful to water only when the soil is dry, not before. This same model could have been suitable for an open space provided that a hole was made in the plastic so as to release any excess water.

Step 3: Put the binding in place

If your location offers a natural fixing support or one already in place (a branch, a point ...), that's perfect, take advantage! If necessary, a fixing must be provided to accommodate the suspension. The most classic fasteners are in the form of metal brackets. The choice of ornaments is important. With this type of system, your suspension will have a fixed height. If you want to place it very high, at least beyond a man's height, you will have to prefer a pulley system, both to facilitate its installation but also and above all to be able to ensure its maintenance (watering, size of wilted flowers, fertilizer supply, etc.).

Position the support and mark the fixing holes with a pencil.

Remove the bracket and use a twist to make a pre-hole for the location of the screws. The wood is hard, and a screwdriver in the handle will not be of any help.

Hang the basket on the support for verification.

Step 4: Plant your plants

Once the plants and the suspension have been chosen, it remains to plant them. Use the planting instructions if your plants have specific needs. Otherwise, place a small layer of drainage using clay balls for example, then finish with a mixture made of potting soil and garden soil.

If the coating is waterproof (here, plastic), incorporate clay balls in the bottom to protect the roots from excess moisture.

Bring the necessary substrate to the plants.

Give a little ease to the roots if your plants come from pots.

You can wrap some parts around the support chains to hide them and give volume to your basket (this will also compensate for the absence of an erect plant). Make sure you have the correct density of plants with regard to the size of your suspension.

Also make sure that the basket is not unbalanced. Pack lightly at the base of the plants and water.

Step 5: Suspend your composition

The fixing is in place, the flowers are watered… It only remains to hoist them in their location, so that they embellish the place and that everyone can contemplate them at leisure!
